News from APA Divisions of Interest to SPIM Members
Consulting Psychology Journal: Practice and Research Volume 69, Issue 1, (March)

The Society of Psychologists in Management’s (SPIM’s) purpose is to facilitate the growth, development, and interaction of psychologists who work as managers or whose primary focus is the application of psychology to management. Management is broadly defined as the act or skill of controlling and making decisions about a business or organization that coordinates the efforts of people to accomplish goals and objectives by using available resources efficiently and effectively. Synonyms for management include: administrating, managing, organizing, directing, leading, applying governance, ruling, commanding, supervising, guiding, and operating. This purpose may be actualized by:
  1. promoting the advancement of management as a profession for psychologists and the involvement of psychologists in management as an important career path in psychology;
  2. improving the practice of management as implemented by psychologists;
  3. supporting the career advancement of such psychologists by providing:
    1. professional development activities,
    2. information dissemination and exchange,
    3. education and training, and
    4. knowledge of employment opportunities; and,
  4. conducting other activities in furtherance of these purposes as may be deemed desirable by the Board of Directors.

Other Benefits to being a SPIM member include:

  • SPIM provides the only 1 day and 1/2 Institute for psychologists new to management positions, taught by psychologists with extensive management experience.
